OBC AND EWS RESERVATION IN MEDICAL EDUCATION

Reservation For OBC & EWS

Reservation For OBC & EWS

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to apply a
reservation for the OBC and Economically backward classes for
medical courses. These courses include MBBS, MD, MS, BDS,
MDS, and diplomas from the current academic year. The
country has 558 medical colleges including 289 government and
269 private colleges. The seats for all Indian medical
admission will have a reservation system. There was no
reservation in the AIQ Scheme until the Supreme Court
introduced a reservation of 15% for SCs and 7.5% for STs in
2007. Now, our PM Mr. Modi has announced a reservation for
medical seats considering the progress of all communities. We
will see what the government has thought for the medical
students.

27% QUOTA FOR OBC AND 10% FOR EWS:

From the 2021-2022 academic session, the government will
begin a 27% quota system for OBC(other backward classes).
There will be a reservation of 10% for economically weaker
sections. This will be included in the AIQ scheme for
undergraduate and postgraduate medical/dental courses in
state medical and dental colleges. The ministry said that “This
a decision would benefit every year nearly 1,500 OBC students
in MBBS and 2,500 OBC students in postgraduation, and also
around 550 EWS students in MBBS and around 1,000 EWS
students in postgraduation,”. “This decision is also in sync with
the significant reforms carried out in the field of medical
education since 2014,” the Ministry said.

Mr. Modi has called it a’ landmark decision’ and tweeted this. He
stated that this decision is taken for the betterment of today’s
youth. Narendra Modi tweeted: “This will immensely help
thousands of our youth every year get better opportunities and
create a new paradigm of social justice in our country.”
In the last six years, the MBBS seats in the country have
increased by 56 % from 54,348 in 2014 to 84,649 in 2020
and that of PG seats has gone up by 80 percent from 30,191
in 2014 to 54,275 in 2020. Initially, there was no reservation
in the AIQ scheme up to 2007. However, this decision made
by Modi Govt can be helpful for youth development.
